Biomechanics and Sports Injuries

What is Biomechanics?

A biomechanical assessment is an examination of the lower limb in gait motion. The foot is a highly complex organ which is composed of 28 bones, many important articulations and 214 ligaments. During the assessment we look at the overall mechanics of your foot and prescribe different treatment options to create optimum function and alleviate any pain.

We acknowledge the importance of using a more holistic approach and seeing the body as a whole, not just focusing on the feet.

To understand what biomechanics is, we simply need to break down the term into two parts. The word ‘Bio’ is a shortened version of the word ‘biology’ and the term ‘mechanics’ refers to the functional movement of something. So in summary, biomechanics refers to the study of human functional movement, in this case specifically the study of the lower limb. Biomechanics is a very broad spectrum term and covers many conditions within podiatry.

Do I Need a Biomechanics Specialist?

Generally if you are experiencing aches, pains, discomfort in your feet, knees, hips or back, or have problems with walking, then we would advise seeking podiatrist help.
